Seniors Submit National FFA Scholarships

It's that time of year again when Holton FFA seniors apply for the National FFA scholarships. The students applying this year include Darien Klahr, Jennifer Hamlin, Ryan Lierz, and Amber Searles. The National FFA gives out 2.1 million dollars in scholarships. The FFA seniors this year are trying there hardest to earn a part of these scholarships in order to strengthen there financial standing and prepare themselves for the College life. 

January FFA Meeting

January Meeting was held on the 27th in Mr. Larison's room. Members moved to purchase a T.V. for the new CDE Study Room. Also members moved to purchase two blankets for the chairs in the CDE Room. Both motions were debated and passed.

2014 Kansas Ag Ed Symposium - Salina, Kansas

  • Mr. Larison Attends KAAE Conference & In-service
    •  Mr. Larison joined Ag Teachers from across the state at the annual MidWinter Inservice in Salina at the end of January.  While there, he received training on food science labs, the AET online recordbook, and participated in other professional development opportunities.
  • Victoria Kimbrough wins Kansas FFA Alumni WLC Scholarship
    • Victoria received a $450 scholarship from the Kansas FFA Alumni to help attend the Washington Leadership Conference in DC this summer.  The scholarship funds were raised from the annual state FFA Alumni auction, help in Salina, Kansas this year.
  • Alumni Affiliate receives State Golden Service Award 
    • The Holton FFA Alumni received the 2014 Golden Service Award from the Kansas FFA Alumni.  This award recognizes affiliates that plan high quality events to support their local FFA chapters.
  • Bowser serves on State Alumni Leadership Board
    •  A huge thanks to Jessica (Lutz) Bowser for serving on the Kansas FFA Alumni Board of Directors.  We appreciate your work at the state level in support of Kansas FFA.

FFA Helps Serve Livestock Expo Lunch

On January 25th at the local Holton Fair building the Livestock expo held it's annual show. Local FFA students came and helped serve lunch to these lucky farmers. They served hot dogs, pulled pork, cole slaw, and cookies to the audience at the show. The students that helped out during the meal include Darien Klahr, Nils Bergsten, Cole Baumgartner, Dean Klahr, Tristan Parks, and Karl Wilhelm. They all had a great time getting in touch and serving the farmers across Jackson County.


 

 

 

Leadership Library and Officer Room

Over the past few month's there has been incredible changes throughout the Ag room. Whether that was leadership development from the students attending, students practicing for there future spots for state CDE's, and the renovating of a new Leadership Library and Officer Room. The Leadership Library is a library of books containing to practice sets for CDE's, Robert's Rules of Order, and articles about the FFA as a whole. The Leadership Library took the place of the officer room, while the officer room was moved to the old storage room which was cleaned out for this cause. As well as that the FFA students moved a motion in the previous meeting to buy a flat screen TV for the Leadership Library. This TV will be used for CDE practices as well as to show demos. With these recent renovations to the Holton FFA shows that the future for FFA is bright.


Ag Ed Program Receives Perkins Grant

This past summer the FFA chapter applied for an $850 grant to purchase a 36 AeroFlo hydroponics unit to experiment with growing various vegetables without the use of soil.
 

Students Update SAE Records

This time of year again FFA students across the school are updating their SAE records. The SAE records show throughout the year the financial stability of all students and how they record their expenses and profits throughout the year. These records help you earn your State degree, understanding the profits that you gain through your SAE, as well as managing money. SAE records help students understand the importance of budgeting as well as well as being a great skill to be learned by students for there future.

Elizabeth applies for American FFA Degree

Good luck to Elizabeth Allen as she applies for her American FFA Degree.  If successful, she will receive the highest degree in the FFA Organization at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky this fall.

Freshmen Start Record-books

FFA green hands across the nation are starting their record books for there first time. That includes the Holton green hands as well. These students understand the key points in the importance of these Record-books. These Record-books will be with them throughout their high school career to help them keep track of there cash flow.


Poinsettias Raised in Horticulture Class

Mr. Bartel's Horticulture I and II planted and raised Poinsettias this year for their winter sale. The Hort II class did an experiment over pinching and which people preferred. For this being the first year planting, it went pretty well and there were many Poinsettias left over. A plan for next years sale is already being made now. 

Dean Klahr and Tristan Parks Presentation

Dean Klahr and Tristan Parks presented their senior prepared speeches to Rotary Club on Friday, February 7th. These two students have put countless time and effort into there speeches in order to prepare for State. As well as that they are very competitive with each other, which helps them become better with there prepared Speech. There presentations have gotten better and better due to the practice they have spent and as many presentations that they have given. The Holton FFA chapter is proud to have these two students representing us at state. 


K-State Ag Ed Speech Day

On February 1st approximately 20 students attended the K-state Ag Ed Speech. With a snowstorm the night before making the highways a little slick the FFA students took there time to get to school to ensure a save trip. As well as that the snowstorm scratched some of the competition due to the dangers it presented them. Although all of this happened the FFA students still had a great time. With Brett Bontrager and Kylie Nelson claiming first and second in the freshman speech division, Brett Bontrager placing first and Alex Clark placing 4th in Creed, Elizabeth DeBoer placing 4th in sophomore division, Dean Klahr placing fourth in senior prepared. As well as that the four finalist in extemporaneous were all from Holton. Tristan Parks took first, followed shortly by Karl Wilhelm taking second, then Dean Klahr claiming third, and Jennifer Hamlin bringing up the rear getting 4th. After the speech was done the Holton Students got to spend some time at the mall, having a overall great day.

FFA Week

On February 16-22nd FFA week is held across the nation for students of the FFA. FFA is held on George Washington's birthday. Monday there will be an Ag Trivia Challenge in the Ag Room at 11:26. Tuesday is dress like a cowboy/cowgirl day. Wednesday will be throwback day, wear a former FFA members jacket or your own. Thursday members are asked to wear a chapter shirt. Friday will be drive your tractor to school and/or wear work clothes day.


FFA Meats CDE

On February 10th the Holton FFA chapter attended the Northeast district Meats CDE. The A team placed 2nd in the district. Placing individually A Team Dean Klahr 3rd, Nicole Kathrens 6th, and Tori Bontrager 8th. The B team placed 1st in district, with Josh Wilhelm 1st and Samantha Beauchamp 3rd individual. 



 

 

 

 8th Grade Recruitment


The Chapter Officer Team and POA Committee 1 went to the middle school and talked to the 8th graders about agriculture and FFA. The 8th graders watched a video about what goes on in Ag classes and FFA. After that they played a Jeopardy game over multiple areas throughout agriculture and FFA.

District SAE Selection Day Results

District Selection Day was held Wednesday February 26th at Holton High School.  Congrats to our members on an outstanding day!

Ryan Lierz Named District Star
FFA Senior Ryan Lierz has been named the 2014 NE District FFA Star in Agribusiness.  He will interview for state star in late April.  Ryan owns Lierz Lawncare and mows for around 30 clients in the Holton Area. Awesome job Ryan.
