2013 State Convention Special Edition

2013 - 1st Place Chapter in Community Development
Below are some highlights from the 85th Kansas FFA State Convention for Holton:

Elizabeth Allen New State FFA Sentinel
     As the convention drew to a close, our very own Elizabeth Allen was elected as the 2013-14 Kansas FFA Sentinel.  After a week of interviews, speeches, workshop presentations, and interacting with delegates, Elizabeth was elected by the convention delegates to the team of 6 serving the over 8,000 members of the Kansas FFA this upcoming school year.  Elizabeth is the 7th State FFA Officer from the Holton FFA.  The new State Officer Team is as follows: 
  • President: Lindy Bilberry, Garden City
  • Vice President: Carrie Carlson, Centre
  • Secretary: Chance Hunley, Riverton
  • Treasurer: Cody Holliday, Jackson Heights
  • Reporter: Daryl Simmons, Minneapolis
  • Sentinel: Elizabeth Allen, Holton






4th Place Triple Crown Chapter/1st Place Community Development
     Holton had another strong finish in the National Chapter Award for Kansas.  4th Place Overall; 1st Place Community Development and 6th Place Student Development.  Thanks to all of our members for another very strong year.  Top 3 chapters were:  Chapman - 1st, Wilson - 2nd, and Southwestern Heights 3rd.






State FFA Degrees
     Congrats to Elizabeth Allen and Darien Klahr for receiving the Gold Charm of the State FFA Degree this year.

Par Law Team gives a Strong Run

The Par Law team narrowly missed the final 4 this year, finishing 3rd in their preliminary room.  They were a very hard working crew and will be back strong next year.









 

Ag Issues Team finishes 3rd

     The Ag Issues Team finished 3rd in the State.  Their presentation focused on the issue of Water Rights versus Water Conservation.  Thanks to all of the community organizations and groups that listened to their presentation and gave them feedback.








Hamlin Participates in Extemp Speaking
     Congrats to Jennifer Hamlin for qualifying to compete in the State Extemporaneous Speaking CDE.  Being a state competitor is quite an honor.

Forestry Team Recognized
     Members of the Forestry Team were recognized for qualifying for the National FFA Forestry CDE in Louisville, Kentucky this October.  Good luck to this team.  State Team Members were:  Nicholas Myers, Isaac Bohnenkemper, Kylie Boyett, and Dillon Kathrens.

State FFA Chorus
Tristan and Victoria did a great job performing in the State FFA Chorus.

Tristan Parks and Victoria Kimbrough were selected to be a part of the State FFA Chorus.  They had two days of practice and two concerts at convention.  Both stepped up and volunteered for song introductions too.  Nice job!








Scholarships Awarded
Congrats to Elizabeth for receiving a National FFA Ford Scholarship courtesy of Foster Ford in Holton and also winning a State FFA Scholarship from Orscheln Farm and Home. 

Karl Wilhelm and Dean Klahr were also recipients of State FFA Alumni Scholarships to help attend WLC.

Quiz Bowl Team Competes

By virtue of placing 1st in the NE District FFA Leadership information contest, the Holton Team qualified for the State Quiz Bowl.  The team had a lot of fun and competed well with this new experience.  They came the closest of any team in the contest to beating Girard FFA, the eventual state champion.
