2016 Special Edition - State FFA Convention Edition

It is always great to see Blue Jackets on campus!

On May 31 - June 3, members from across the state traveled to the 88th Kansas FFA Convention in Manhattan. Over 1600 members and supporters of Agriculture Education came together to "Amplify" their voice, impact, and vision of the Kansas FFA.  The Holton FFA had another great convention, details are below.

And the State Star Farmer is...Congrats Sam!

Beauchamp Named State Star Farmer

  • On Friday afternoon, as the convention was drawing to a close, Samantha Beauchamp was named Kansas FFA Star Farmer which is one of the most prestigious awards given from the State. For her Supervised Agriculture Experience Program, Sam owns Sammies Hammies where she raises hogs to sell as show pigs to 4H'ers and as butcher pork to local customers.  Sam was selected as NE District Star Farmer based on her State FFA Degree application and FFA Record Book. She is only the 3rd female State Star Famer in Kansas FFA History and the first since 1995. She also is only the 3rd State Star from the Holton FFA in our chapter's history joining 2003 State Star Farmer, Chase Bontrager and 2006 State Star in Placement, Austin Winter.

Thank you to Farm Credit for sponsoring the Stars of Kansas Luncheon.

Karl and Dean Conclude Service as Kansas FFA Officers

  • 2015-16 was a special year as we got to watch two of our very own serve the Kansas FFA Association as State Officers.  This is the first time Holton has had two state officers in the same year and both Karl and Dean had an outstanding year of service. Thank you both for representing Holton FFA, your families and our communities with such dedication and class.

Dean gave his retiring address on Thursday morning titled "Believe" to a full McCain Auditorium.
Dean has always been an exceptional public speaker.
The State FFA Secretary is known as "The Voice" of FFA Convention, great convention Dean.
Karl with the gavel and podium at convention. Karl and the late Marvin Decker from 1951-52 are the only Holton FFA'ers to serve as State FFA President.  Amazing!
Karl wrapped up his convention on Friday afternoon with his retiring address titled "Remember our Roots".

Holton 5th in the National Chapter Award - Triple Crown

  • Congrats to our members for placing 5th in the State Triple Crown Award for 2016. The chapter finished gold division in all three areas of the award for the 18th time in 21 years. This recognition is based off the activities conducted by our chapter throughout the course of the year 2015-16 school year.  Congrats to Chapman FFA for the overall win this year!
  • We finished 6th in Community Development
  • We finished 5th in Student Development
  • Chapter Develop Rankings still have not been released at the time of this update, but we will add them once we have them.

Two Members Finalists for John Deere Gator Give-Away

  •  Each year, a John Deere Gator is given away from the John Deere dealers in Kansas. 10 finalists are drawn from everyone that submits a state application: State Degree, District Proficiency Award, Scholarship, American Degree, etc. Rilee VanDonge (American Degree Applicant) and Samantha Beauchamp (district proficiency) were drawn as top 10 finalists. The gator ended up going to Ryan Steward from Washington County, but it was sure cool to see two of our members have a chance.  THANK YOU JOHN DEERE and Kansas FFA Foundation.

Parliamentary Procedure Team Competes

Team Members: Sam Beauchamp, Elizabeth DeBoer, Sarah Bond, Tel Wittmer, Joshua Clark, and Kage Pelton.

  • The Par Law team just missed advancing to the finals after placing 3rd in their SemiFinals room. The team presented a demo, answered oral questions, and wrote minutes. This team worked very hard to prepare and will return the core of its members next year, great things are in store for this crew.

Klahr competes in State FFA Creed Speaking

  • After winning the NE District Creed Speaking CDE last winter, Danni competed as a State FFA Creed Speaking Semi Finalist. As one of 14 state speakers, she presented the creed and answered questions for the judges.
We are very proud of you Danni.

Thanks for hosting us for a visit Chad!
  • On Thursday afternoon the chapter visited Holton FFA Alum and Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Chad Bontrager. It was a great visit and we really appreciate the opportunity to learn more about Kansas Agriculture and the KDA. Also got a chance to get some advice from a former Holton FFa'er along the way.

  • Alex Myers joined the State FFA Band percussion section this year. They practiced on Tuesday and Wednesday and performed in front of the whole convention on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon. Great job Alex.
