National Proficiency Finalist Interviews
National Finalist Interview Week was September 23-26. Delaney Interviewed in the 2 PM flight via zoom on September 24 and Lora interviewed in the 2 PM flight via zoom on September 26. Both finalists reported the interviews went well and they had fun. We can’t wait to see them on stage in Lucas Oil Stadium later in October.
Thank you to everyone who helped with practice interviews for our two members. They said it helped a lot and felt prepared. The interviews at home were harder than the national ones. Good luck Delaney and Lora.
Fall CDE Day: by Lora
The 2024 Fall CDE Day was another one for the books. With 33 members and four teams competing Holton FFA really showed up to represent. We brought home 13 medals, and 4 plaques with almost 20 members placing in the top 10 individually. Our competition highlights are below:
Our A-team Land Judging team won the contest with Emberlee Allen placing 1st, Mara Marten in 2nd, Lora Larison in 4th, and Wyatt Shields in 5th.
B-team Land Judging also had a great day and placed 1st as a team. Jacey Willard was 1st, Rebekah Dement was 2nd, Tinsley Bradley came in 5th, and they had several other top 20 medalists.
In true Holton FFA fashion our B-team Homesite crew had almost a complete sweep. Grant Warner in 2nd, Kanin Segenhagen 3rd, Tristan Schlodder 4th, Camden Schuster 5th, Tyson Carlson 6th, Brody’s King 9th, and Landon Sawyer 10th.
The A-team Nursery and Landscape placed 2nd overall as a team with Lora Larison placing second, Lucas White in 3rd, and Haidn Newell in 10th.

Kansas State Fair Birthing Center Volunteers by Adalyn Bartels
Sunday September 15th the chapter helped volunteer at the K state birthing center at state fair. We spent the day doing a few things, like showing kids how to wrap a horse’s leg or helping with how to pull a calf using the model. Working at the birthing center provided an volunteer experience for Lora Larison and Addie Bartels at the state level. Since we were short handed, 7th graders Clara Larison and Brenna Bontrager tagged along to help out. Members also had time to explore the fair and see the various exhibits and attractions.

National Nursery Team Prepares for Indy: by Lora
Our National Nursery Team of Jacob Huyett, Jace Huyett, Madeline Bontrager, and Lucas White are working hard to prepare for their upcoming competition. The team is working hard on plant identification, written test information, learning landscape design, and their team activity. During National Convention week they will compete in the National Nursery CDE at the State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. We are so excited to see how the hard work and dedication this group is putting in pays off during the convention. Keep up the hard work!

Greenhand Conference - Addison
On September 18th, 25 first year members participated in the NE District Greenhand Conference at Silver Lake. Members took an information test the day before and participated in fun learning activities while at the conference. Julie Bontrager tied for 8th on the information test out of over 400 kids! Julie will fill the role of Greenhand President this year. Our NE District Sentinel, Madeline Bontrager, was also spotted at the Greenhand Conference. Maddy and the rest of the district officer team did a fabulous job putting together this event! Members enjoyed Golden Corral for lunch and a tour of our past local FFA service projects. What a great day for the chapter!

Late Summer Points Trip: by Lane
For the fall FFA Points Trip, the top 30 most involved members had an opportunity to attend the Royals game on September 22nd, 2024. We had 5 of the 30 top members attend, along with the 2 FFA advisors, Jason Larison and Alex Bartel. The group left Holton at 9:45 a.m. and stopped at “Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue” in Kansas City for lunch. The Royals vs Giants game started at 1:10 p.m. and ended with the Royals losing 0-2. The members who attended said they enjoyed the experience and would attend again.
Thank you City of Holton for the Practice Pits
We are appreciative once again to Denny Ashcraft and the crew with the city water department for digging practice pits for our classes. We were able to study soil profiles, experience soil depth and locate surface an subsurface texture changes. A bunch of students in the program visited these sites over the 2 weeks leading up to the district competition and learned a lot about soils as a natural resource.
Ag Welding Students Complete OSHA Certification
Students enrolled in Ag Welding class are once again completing their OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Certification through our partnership with Washburn Tech. Great job to these students for earning their blue cards!
